Workshop Description

This workshop is intended to reach out to women who are interested in learning Objective-C. Men are welcome to come if you find a woman who wants to learn Objective-C and come together. RailsBridge is emphatically queer and trans* friendly. Our events focus on increasing diversity in tech, so that people of all backgrounds can feel welcome and comfortable in our industry.

To take part in this workshop, you will need:

1) to bring a Mac computer running OSX 10.9.3 or later or later (needed for X-Code 6).

We can help you with the rest but do your best to do the following before Saturday morning (e.g. during the Virtual Installfest).

2) Download X-Code 6 Here you will be asked to create an Apple Developer account (you only need the free version, if you already have an Apple ID, you can sign in with this)

3) Download Cocoapods
Note: If you are downloading CocoaPods using the “stock” Ruby on your computer (meaning you haven't downloaded a different version of Ruby on your computer), then from terminal you should run:
sudo gem install cocoapods

If you are running “rvm” (maybe because you went to a RailsBridge event and installed this version), then from your terminal you should run:
gem install cocoapods

Unsure which version of ruby are running? Type ruby -v into your terminal, press enter and then which ruby and press enter again.

In this workshop, we'll take you through building a complete iPhone application using Objective-C and X-Code. At the end of the day, you will have developed an application on the internet that connects to a database and reads and writes information.

During the Friday evening 7-8pm Virtual InstallFest via Google Hangout (links listed below), we'll be helping students install X-Code 6 and Cocoapods. The X-Code 6 download is quite large, so be sure you have a good internet connection. You only need to jump onto a Virtual InstallFest Google Hangout if you run into problems while doing these installations or have general questions about the event.
