Workshop Description

This workshop is intended to reach out to women who are interested in learning iOS Development. MobileBridge is emphatically queer and trans* friendly. Our events focus on increasing diversity in tech, so that people of all backgrounds can feel welcome and comfortable in our industry.

Men are welcome to come if you find a woman who wants to learn iOS Development and come together.

In this workshop, we'll take you through Objective-C, XCode, and iOS app development. We'll meet up on Friday to install all of the software you need, and then spend Saturday learning and writing code. Programmers of all skill levels, even total beginners are welcome. We will have different classes separated by experience level.

Sometimes people ask if the Friday night InstallFest is mandatory, and yes, it is! It's a crucial part of the weekend, even if you've already gone through the instructions independently. The reason that we're able to get through the curriculum on Saturday is that every single student has had their development environment checked, so we're all working in the same versions.

Setup

You'll need a laptop running either Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) or Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite).
The BridgeTroll student registration page will offer you other choices, but those choices only apply to RailsBridge workshops, not the MobileBridge iOS workshop. (BridgeTroll is in the process of being refactored as the new *Bridges like MobileBridge starting using it too.)

Setup instructions

If you will be upgrading either your OS X or your XCode, please back up the things that are important to you (existing iOS projects, software keys for specialty software, etc) -- ideally on a separate external hard drive. If you have specialty software (video editing software, etc), please check with the user and support communities for the compatible versions of OS X before upgrading. Feel free to email us at [email protected] with any questions or visit your local Apple store.

Very sorry to say, there will be no childcare. However, we understand this is an essential feature to increasing the number of women in tech and it is something we are working on for next time.
