Workshop Description

Are you interested in learning how to create dynamic web applications? Want to get an in-depth introduction to Ruby on Rails? RailsBridge Chicago is back for Workshop 2, Electric Boogaloo, and we want to help you level up!

This is a free (and fun!) introduction to Ruby on Rails for women and their guests. No programming experience is required and any level of skill is welcome, from total newbies to Rubyists who just want to brush up. We will start from scratch and walk you through the steps to set up a fully-functioning online database app by the end of the day, even if right now you couldn’t tell an app from a tea cosy! You’ll be a regular Grace Hopper in no time.

The workshop takes place over two days at Enova in downtown Chicago. Friday evening you’ll meet your fellow students at installfest, where we’ll help you make sure your computer is set up with all the right tools to jump right in on Saturday morning. Saturday we’ll be coding up a storm from 9am until 5pm, after which we will head to Dev Bootcamp for an afterparty to celebrate your success!

Is Friday mandatory? Yes, yes it is. What if you've totally got everything installed, you promise? Well, think of how easy it will be on you and the lovely volunteers to get you your "all good!" sticker on Friday when they've got time to review your craftsmanship! In all seriousness, Saturday is a big day and we can't take time away from everyone's coding, so if you're not approved by Saturday morning you might not be able to participate in the workshop.

This event is open to anyone who identifies as a woman. We ask that others only sign up if they are coming as the “guest” of a female attendee (we’ll ask you who you’re coming with on the registration form). Guests must also register for the event. We need to have enough pizza to feed you all!

Don't forget to follow us on Twitter @RailsBridgeChi for more updates!

Sponsors

If your company is interested in sponsoring RailsBridge Chicago for future events or ongoing chapter costs, we’d love to hear from you!

Enova is located at 200 West Jackson on the 13th floor, fabulously accessible by CTA. Brown, Orange, Pink and Purple lines: use the Quincy/Wells stop. Blue and Red: take it to Jackson.

While we highly recommend public transportation for this workshop (parking in the loop can be pricey!), we’re looking into parking options and will update our attendees when we’ve got the best lead for a good deal.

Food and Drinks

We’ll be having a pizza party Friday night complete with soda and beer! Saturday, we provide lunch and a light breakfast (think coffee and bagels). Our afterparty will have light food and drinks.

Childcare

We at RailsBridge are firm believers in having free childcare at our events! We are offering childcare at the Dev Bootcamp location -- if you will be needing childcare, please contact us and we will confirm the logistics and details.

Note: Childcare is only during workshop hours and does not extend to the afterparty (children will be welcome there, but no childcare is provided).

Afterparty

To celebrate your new Rails applications (waahoooooo!) we will be heading to Dev Bootcamp after the workshop for drinks and light food. Dev Bootcamp is located at 351 W Hubbard, Suite 701, and is just a short hop down the brown line from Enova (no navigation worries, we'll have a brown line parade!). It's only about a mile away if you'd prefer to walk. All ages are welcome at the afterparty, and we'll have a few fun activities planned as well as some good old mingling.

Dev Bootcamp will also be offering tours of the space and will have staff members and alumni on hand to answer any questions you might have about their program!
