Workshop Description
Join us for a day of HTML, CSS and JavaScript learning at
Groupon Palo Alto offices! By the end of the day, you should be familiar with the concepts that go into building sites for the web, and have built one of your own!
Attendees should identify as a woman, and can bring a guest of any gender. You should be comfortable using a computer, but no programming experience or hardware expertise is required. You should have your own laptop to bring along. Mac, Windows, and Linux machines are welcome. And if you sign up but don't get the confirmation email, check your spam folder!
Things to Consider
We work really hard to put these events on and we'd love it if the people who sign up show up, or at least cancel with enough notice that folks on the wait list have enough notice to make it. We've "sold out" most of our events so far only to have people not show up or cancel at the very last minute. That makes it really hard on the folks on the waitlist who don't get bumped up until the last minute and can't make it and means we can't get everyone in who wants to attend.
Prerequisites
You'll need the following things to be able to successfully participate in RailsBridge:
- A reasonably up to date laptop running Windows, OS X or Linux
- The power cord for that laptop
- A text editor like
Atom,
Brackets or
Sublime Text
- A little patience
- A little curiosity
Sponsors
A huge thank you to
Groupon for sponsoring this event!
Transportation and Parking
Groupon Palo Alto offices are located five minutes walk away from the
California Ave Caltrain Station.
We also have a Carpool doc: google doc.
Alternatively, free parking is available right next to the address, and there should be plenty for everyone.
Food and Drinks
We'll have breakfast, lunch and snacks, so come with both an appetite for learning and one for food!
Our Policy on Kids
We think having kids between the ages of 8 - 18 attend RailsBridge is awesome!! But, because we're barely responsible adults ourselves, we don't want to be responsible for them. But, we'd love it if parents and kids attended together! So, if your kid wants to attend, you should both sign up and come together! We'd love to have you!
Volunteer Details
Be sure to review the curriculum before the workshop. We have several curricula available at
http://docs.railsbridge.org, and we'll be using the Frontend one for this workshop.
Student Details
Students should identify as a woman, and can bring a guest of any gender. You should be comfortable using a computer, but no programming experience or hardware expertise is required. You should have your own laptop to bring along. Mac, Windows, and Linux machines are welcome. Your computer already has a text editor (Notepad or TextEdit), but we recommend you get a slightly fancier one that can highlight code in different colors. We recommend one of these:
- Atom or
- Brackets (get the version WITH Preview/Extract) or
- Sublime Text.
Afterparty
Will be held at Groupon. We have a great game room with a pool table, game consoles and other fun stuff.
