Installfest

Join us at ThoughtWorks Atlanta, 1175 Peachtree St NE #100 Atlanta, GA 30361, the evening before the workshop to get your computers set up. We'll help you install everything you need to dive in the next morning and start getting you comfortable with using it. Please note: this session is required for all attendees. Even if you have everything installed, we'll be able to update everything and make sure you're comfortable with the environment. Having everyone on the same page will help the Monday workshop go much more smoothly!

Workshop Description

Have you ever wondered how your favorite web application works? Are you a newbie developer who is grinding away at online tutorials but missing the spark of collaboration? Do you wish you could turn your coding hobby into a satisfying day job? Are you itching to build something from scratch using a new-to-you framework?

Join us for the second RailsBridge workshop in Atlanta! Our mission is to work toward diversifying the development community, so this event is for anyone who identifies as female or anyone from another group that is under-represented in tech.

This Ruby on Rails workshop is hands-on, group-oriented, and fast-paced. You’ll be coached by local developers and progress from installing the necessary tools on your machine to deploying a functioning web application by the end of the day. The curriculum will set you up with the foundation you'll need to continue learning whatever web technologies strike your fancy.

Women who have attended Atlanta Rails workshops in the past have gone on to:

  • win local hackathons,
  • participate in the international Rails Girls Summer of Code program, and
  • transition from “developing developers” to full-time Rails developers.

Not to mention, the coaches represent some of the best developers in the Atlanta area.

Transportation and Parking

ThoughtWorks at Colony Square has and underground parking deck. Public parking is located under the 100 Colony Square building accessible from 14th street or Peachtree Street. Please note that there is a charge for parking in this garage. From the parking decks, please take escalators to the Food Court Level. Walk past the security desk towards the W Hotel entrance at the end of the mall. Turn right into the corridor just before Moe's. Once you pass through the glass doors, you'll want to take the elevators on the left-hand side of the elevator bank to the 14th floor. The ThoughtWorks office entrance will be to the right of exiting the elevators.

ThoughtWorks is also accessible from MARTA via the Arts Center Station which is about a ten minute walk to Colony Square.

We encourage you to carpool if you're coming with a buddy.

Food and Drinks

Thanks to our amazing sponsors, we'll be providing:
  • breakfast + coffee (a must)
  • lunch
  • a special treat at the end of the day (Pssst....it's ice cream cake!)

What to Bring

Please bring your laptop and its power cord! Windows, Mac, and Linux machines are all fine, but keep in mind that things might run a little differently depending on your operating system. Bring your thinking caps and a big dose of patience. Programming is fun, but it takes some getting used to, so don't get frustrated if the first part of the day is overwhelming. We've got the best folks on hand to guide you through, and you'll leave with a whole new perspective.
