Workshop Description

This workshop is intended to reach out to women and non-binary people who are interested in learning Scala! We are emphatically queer & trans inclusive! Attendance of the workshop is free.

In this workshop, we'll take you through the basics of functional programming in Scala, a powerful language that has uses in everything from web applications to data science to large-scale distributed systems. By the end of the day, you'll have built several doodles, have a basic understanding of functional programming, and a grasp of Scala fundamentals.

To attend this event, you should have at least some familiarity with another programming language (like Ruby, Python, or Javascript). Students will be separated into different classes based on the experience level they choose when signing up. If you are completely new to programming, you should look at attending a ClojureBridge or Railsgirls event instead. In the future, we hope we will be able to offer more introductory ScalaBridge workshops as well.

Dieser Workshop richtet sich an Frauen und nicht-binäre Menschen, die sich für Scala interessieren. Wir sind queer- und trans-inklusiv! Die Teilnahme am Workshop ist kostenlos.

Wir werden in diesem Workshop die Grundlagen funktionaler Programmierung in Scala behandeln. Scala ist eine Programmiersprache, die überall – von Web-Applikationen über Data Science bis zu großen verteilten Systemen – Anwendung findet. Am Ende des Workshops habt ihr damit mehrere Doodles geschrieben, ein Basiswissen über funktionale Programmierung erlangt und eine Idee von den Scala-Grundlagen.

Um diesen Workshop zu besuchen, solltet ihr mindestens eine andere Programmiersprache (wie z.B. Ruby, Python oder Javascript) kennen und anwenden können. Wir teilen die Gruppe nach Erfahrungslevel auf, dass ihr angebt wenn ihr euch für den Workshop anmeldet. Wenn du noch nie programmiert hast, ist ein Railsgirls oder ClojureBridge Event die bessere Wahl für dich. In Zukunft hoffen wir auch ScalaBridge-Events für Menschen ohne Programmiererfahrung anbieten zu können.

Language

The learning material is in English, so you should be able to understand written English. We will split the groups and have teams who will discuss the material in German and teams who will have their discussions in English.

Das Lernmaterial ist auf Englisch, du solltest also geschriebenes Englisch verstehen. Wir werden die Gruppen nach Sprachen aufteilen, sodass die Teams das Lernmaterial entweder auf Deutsch oder Englisch besprechen können.

Unfortunately, the location of the workshop is not accessible by wheelchair. We hope to find a more accessible location for the next workshop.

Dinner will be provided at the installfest. Breakfast and lunch will be provided on the day of the workshop.

Afterparty

After the workshop we'll go to a restaurant nearby to talk and grab something to eat and/or drink. You're welcome to join us. Please let us know if you want to attend. Unfortunately, we cannot cover the expenses for the dinner and drinks.
