Workshop Description

This workshop is organized specifically for people belonging to marginalized communities in tech. This includes people who are: BIPOC, transgender, non-binary, gender non-conforming, and/or women. If this doesn't describe you, you are welcome to help with outreach by inviting someone and attending as their plus one. We are emphatically queer & trans inclusive!

In this workshop, we'll take you through the process of building interactive web applications using Elm, a delightful frontend language for reliable web apps. By the end of the day, you'll have built an interactive web app and have a basic understanding of functional programming.

We'll start the morning with installing all of the software needed, and then spend the rest of the day learning and writing code. To attend this event, you should have at least some familiarity with another programming language (like Ruby, Python, or Javascript). Students will be separated into different classes based on the experience level they choose when signing up. If you are completely new to programming, you should look at attending a RailsBridge event instead, or wait for a future ElmBridge event when we hope to offer more-introductory workshops.

Schedule

9-10am: Check-in, breakfast, and software installation (please arrive by 9:30am at the latest)
10am: Opening talk, grouping students up with mentors

Sponsors

We are so grateful to Pivotal for both offering their office space as well as all the work they've done to ensure that the facilities and space are comfortable and accessible by all of our attendees.

Thank you also to our food sponsor, findSisterhood! They'll be around on the day of the workshop to share more about the findSisterhood network, their LA launch event, and job opportunities.

Transportation and Parking

The best parking is actually in the building on weekends! It's $8 all day. Also, there is a city garage right next to the building.

The office is also within walking distance of the Santa Monica Expo Line stops.

Food and Drinks

Breakfast and lunch will be provided. Please note dietary restrictions in your response to the event.

Childcare

We will have a separate room for kids with at least one adult supervising. Please make sure you bring activities for your child as we will be unable to provide more than space and supervision.

As a volunteer, you'll be assisting throughout the day by mentoring a group of students as they work through the day's exercises and project. You won't need to prepare anything ahead of time; the event organizers will help you on the day of the event to work with your group.

Thanks for signing up to be a volunteer! You should receive an email with some additional information for you as well as how to reach out if you have any issues.
