RailsBridge

Installfest + Workshop

Fri 4/19/2013
Start time: 2:30 pm PDT
End time: 2:30 pm PDT

RailsBridge is a free programming workshop for women and their friends. Attendees will have help installing all the tools required to start programming and will have a day of instruction with lots of hands on experience and assistance from teaching assistants. No prior programming experience is necessary!

Friday night: install-fest (5:30-8:30pm)

The install-fest is for getting your computer set up with the tools you'll need to participate in the workshop on Saturday. Even if you have the software installed you are still encouraged to come to the install-fest to meet your fellow participants and make sure there are no problems that will have to be sorted out during the workshop.

Saturday: Workshop (9:00am-5:00pm)

An instructor will lead you through the basics of programming and offer opportunities to exercise the skill you'll be acquiring. By the time you leave you should be comfortable reading Ruby program code and writing some basic programs. The environment is non-competitive and encouraging.

There will be snacks during the install-fest, and breakfast and lunch during the workshop at no cost.

(Sometimes people ask if the Friday night installfest is mandatory, and yes, it is! It's a crucial part of the weekend, even if youve already gone through the instructions independently. There are a ton of moving parts when setting up a development environment, and the reason that were able to get through the curriculum on Saturday is that every single student has had their dev environment checked and has been awarded a sticker for their successes. There are also enough changing parts that even if youve been to a workshop in the past, you should attend the Installfest to get re-verified, because this stuff changes almost constantly.)

A note to the gentlemen:

The preferred way for a male to attend is as the +1 of a female participant, so we make sure to maintain the core mission of being "for women and their friends." Drop a note to the organizers if you really, really want to participate and can't convince your female friends to participate and bring you as a +1 -- but know that we will bump you if we need more space.

A note for volunteers:

If you're interested in volunteering please RSVP for the volunteer meetup: http://www.meetup.com/Collexion-Hackerspace/events/112293542/ and leave these spots open for participants.
